Bridport Depot
The development is to house an operational base for National Highways and the new maintenance compound, encompassing office and welfare accommodation for depot staff, garage storage for four gritting lorries and associated, and a salt barn and brine storage / preparation.
Locally-sourced timber rainscreen cladding, with a primary timber frame structure, hemp-fibre infill, and an inner leaf of hemp-block insulation, finished with a lime plaster, forms a fully natural, carbon negative, breathable façade.
Fully natural external wall build-up with timber structure, locally-sourced timber cladding, natural insulation and lime plaster internally. Hemp is renewable, biodegradable and carbon-negative.
The design, layout and massing of the building envelope has been sculpted to sit comfortably within its context. The proposed office element is a single-storey structure below a mono-pitch roof. The form allows the installation of a bio-solar green roof to enhance biodiversity and decarbonise the energy strategy.
Integrated louvres are hidden within the external façade detailed behind hit and miss timber cladding to soften the exterior appearance in the woodland setting. The base of the garage and office building is a concrete plinth. On the garage this provides a robust and readily maintained façade that reflects the building's use, with similarities to farm buildings in the locale.
