Dunster House is a large, three storey building of red brick construction with a slate roof, set in large grounds. The property incorporates a front facing gable with double height bay and is well detailed, a plaque dates the property at 1879.
The property is considered a non-designated heritage asset, and is identified as such in the adopted conservation area character appraisal. This derives from its historic interest, and aesthetic/architectural value, it also has some associative value in the 1880s being the home of Tom High Harrison, a local master organ builder.
The proposed extension reads subordinate in proportion relative to the host building, with a simple shape and form. The flat roof single storey mass and light-weight frontage expressing itself honestly as a contemporary evolution of the built form, a highly crafted design response.
